View Full Version : the best and optimal settings for 1GB PCs on "medium" <-- here !

i got the marvin debugger running right now and was able to monitor my cache usage and created the optimal settings for editing in the ge3.ini

Please note those settings are valid/good only if you run w/ 1GB memory...and the same settings as me (MEDIUM, with all distance-settings on HIGH). If yo use other settings, high textures etc. the cache-demand is bigger and those values might not be suficient !

You have to have "resource cache" on "medium" in the main-menu to apply these settings !

I will give a tip how to fugure those values out at the end of the posting !

Edit/Change this in the ge3.ini:

Cache.SizeImage=128000000
Cache.SizeMesh=57000000
Cache.SizeSound=18000000
Cache.SizeMaterial=21000000
Cache.SizeCollisionMesh=16000000
Cache.SizeAnimation=30000000
Cache.SizeSpeedTree=10000000

...

ResourceCache.u32ImageMaxMemUsage_Medium=128000000
ResourceCache.u32MeshMaxMemUsage_Medium=57000000
ResourceCache.u32SoundMaxMemUsage_Medium=18000000
ResourceCache.u32MaterialMaxMemUsage_Medium=210000
ResourceCache.u32CollisionMeshMaxMemUsage_Medium=1 6000000
ResourceCache.u32AnimationMaxMemUsage_Medium=30000 000
ResourceCache.u32SpeedTreeMaxMemUsage_Medium=10000 000

there is still something not clear with that LAST value, which orignally is 100.000...then turned out it HAS to be a million. But MAYBE it needs to be 10 Mil (10000000) since i dont understand why they allocate 10MB in the first block above..but then only 1MB (1 mill) there. I set it to 10Mil and i dont have any problem.

EXPLANATION:
I monitred cache usage in the game with MY settings...eg. walking from ardea thru the woods to cape dun etc...

Its a VERY good idea to increase image cache to 128M, whilest other values can actually be smaller.

I am pretty sure those settings are OPTIMAL, at least for my settings, hardware and the level i was checking in the game.

regarding the marvin/debugger modus:

You can only get it running properly be DEPACKING the _compiledimage.PAK and _compiledimage.p00 file. (in THIS order, p00 files are patches)

Then delete the two .pak/.p00 files.

then marvin mode runs properly...and with CTRL-S you can get information regarding your cache usage !!

So..if other people want to creat OPTIMUM settings...eg. w/ 2GB ram etc....do it like this....start marvin....and then use some HIGH (but still reaosnable settings in the cache/resource - section in the ge3.ini...and MONITOR their usage. Then play a while...write down how much is used....etc.

UPD: i am playing a while with this and i really think the values are best, at least for 1GB. Because the cache is always like 97% filled, never TOTALLY full....even the 128MB imagecache...so i use the MAX possible cache without wasting too much memory. If you use a too high sound-cache etc. then you're just wasting memory which is low anyway !

ALSO...

Note that the stuttering is not 100% GONE...there is just no way...especially eg. if you go to a new area and the game HAS TO load new data which is NOT in cache yet. There is also no way (in my opinion) even with a 2 or 3GB system EXCEPT someone would tweak up the settings so he'd use 2GB or more JUST ALONE for the cache....but even THEN it would still stutter because every gamedata/file has to enter the cache ONCE at one point in the game. Its impossible to hold the whole 4GB gamedate in mem ;)

Report back how those settings work for you, especially if you have only 1GB memory.

Thanks for sharing your research! I'll give these a shot in a bit and let you know how it turns out..

Here's hoping some more 1gig people see this.

I was running with the default "low" settings before, but these settings seem to make a difference for me. Gameplay is smoother, but I still get a some stuttering from time to time. It's better than the default .ini and default "low" was though.
My box:
AMD Athlon64 Venice 3000+ 1.8GHz @ 2.25GHz
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128M
1GB RAM

Considering my machine is on the lower end, I'm pleased with the settings and performance. Thanks ;)

Thanks alot for posting these tweaks. I will test them out and post my results along with my system specs.

Regarding the marvin/debugger modus. How do I depack the .pak and .p00 files?

Can't we get 1 topic full of tweaks in stead of 20.000 posts XD?

Thank you very much for the tweaks , the game is running very well now.

Finally!! The brightest head in the tweaking :)) i used your tweaking instructions, mostly the part in using the debuger, and the game as flaw as fluid with sexy graphics,
of course several stutters are still there, but i got what I wanted:) thx!:clap: :clap: :ok:

P.S.
a bit of off-topic, what's the PC equivalent for my Laptop Toshiba Sattelite MX50 1.7 Ghz and 1 GB of RAM?
and I have Intel Pentium Centrino technology

Thanks for the tips, your ini midification + clean windows boot make the game run REALLY much better. It's not perfectly smooth all the time (almost) but I can play without fear of "where is the guru" and over memory problems.Good job !

Hi there folks, first time poster long time lurker.

Last night I was messing with the .ini and I noticed the following settings

Render.MeshLoDQuality=UltraHigh
Render.AnimationLoDQuality=UltraHigh
Render.ImageLoDQuality=UltraHigh

no matter what I change inside the game they remain like that, has anyone changed those values ? If so, did you notice any improvement ?

And another question, has anyone else noticed a decrease in performance during the night cycle with all the sounds of animals playing ? (owls and such)

Cheers!

yep, I have mine set as:

Render.MeshLoDQuality=Normal
Render.AnimationLoDQuality=Normal
Render.ImageLoDQuality=Normal
Render.DisableMeshLoDQualityFragmentString=lowpoly

Though, I only got maringal performance increase, I do not think mine will get any better than it is currently, only thing that could possibly be improved for me I think will be the load stutter.

And another question, has anyone else noticed a decrease in performance during the night cycle with all the sounds of animals playing ? (owls and such)

The game has known issues with sound, what do you have sound set for ingame? You will most likely need to make sure it is set to "Stereo" as the other options causes issues. When I do not have it set for Stereo, I get all kinds of messed up sound things going on. From weird sounds, to losing sounds.

No m8, no improvement in the game itself, and I think you should decrease sound cash, so you won't get a sudden decrease of performance :)

Thank you for the feedback guys.

@Dllfile - I have tried both the cache configurations going around in this forum, I thing I'm going to revert to the ones in this post, it doesn't matter what I use the behaviour is the same, stutters when it's loading new information then it stops loading and the game is quite playable, I try to think of it has "catching my breath" eheh, I think I want a magical combination of settings that will make the stutter go away but deep within I know i'm just impatiently waiting for the new patch :)

@Rondovull - will definitely try to reduce the sound cache, I read a while ago in some other forum that this guy had good results reducing all the default cache setting to half. I think I'm going to try that as well.

Cheers!

ahh, bummer, well, im not sure if the ones floating around the forums are good, I think they are running good for whatever system they were tested on. I personally just edited the settings myself by using the same as Flexy did, Marvin Mode + CTRL+S and setting my sound cache slightly higher than the highest I saw my game use after around 30-45 minutes of gameplay. Though.. A new patch is out, so I will no doubt have to test and see how things are working and adjust again if needed. Going to do a reinstall to make sure everything is up to date, probably will start a new game just to be sure I do not get anything left over.

Thx man, It's a great fix!

Made the game on my Athlon64 3200, 1 GB RAM, Galaxy 7300GT MUCH MORE PLAYABLE :)

Now i can really enjoy it (regarding performance, 'cause gameplay still needs a lot of work :/)

This worked slightly better than what I had; what people said, just loading when going into new areas. Then after everything has loaded (which takes a lot of time), it will be smooth sailing. I suppose there's no going around that, but this is one of the best settings I've seen so far for my 1GB system.

Thanx flexy

Game still fubar'd, after what PB did with NoTR I was expecting something spectacular with GIII...

I tried the other fix about the gothic3.ttf font and it was amazing how much it affected my game. With stock ini and using a 40k ttf, rarely any stutter. You have to use medium settings. I'll try the ini settings here tonight and see if I can get it better.

You can depack them by using G3Pak tool. Just search some threads to find a downloading link.
